The scoping memo: a one-page habit worth keeping
Before any engagement starts we write one page. It takes a day, and it has saved every project it preceded.
By Theo Vance

What goes on the page
The question we are answering, in one sentence. What is in scope and, more importantly, what is out. Who decides, who contributes, and who needs to be told. The dates that matter and the fee for each phase.
The memo is not a contract. It is the thing we read together on the first call so that nobody discovers a different understanding in week six.
Why one page
Because people read one page. Anything longer becomes a document that is signed rather than understood.
